Biography

Dreaming of Becoming One of the greatest contemporary Writers

Thomas J. “Tom” Glyph, a 52-year-old adventurer and educator, was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, on a crisp autumn morning in 1972. Growing up in the heart of North Texas, Tom developed a love for storytelling, the outdoors, and exploring the unknown. These passions would later define his unconventional career path and lifestyle.

Tom pursued a degree in English Literature at the University of Texas, where he honed his skills as a writer and nurtured a curiosity for different cultures. His wanderlust was ignited during a semester abroad in Kyoto, Japan, where he first encountered the vibrancy of Japanese culture. After graduation, Tom set off to teach English in Osaka, a bustling city that became his home away from home.

While teaching, Tom discovered another passion: scuba diving. A vacation to Okinawa introduced him to the breathtaking underwater world of Japan’s southern seas. Captivated by the serenity and beauty of the ocean, he earned his dive instructor certification and began splitting his time between two vastly different worlds—teaching English in Osaka’s urban classrooms and guiding diving expeditions in the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific.

Over the years, Tom became well-known in both fields. His engaging teaching style and genuine enthusiasm for literature earned him a loyal following among students, while his deep knowledge of marine ecosystems and knack for creating unforgettable underwater experiences drew diving enthusiasts from around the globe.

Tom’s life is a delicate balance of contrasts: the structured discipline of teaching English juxtaposed with the free-flowing rhythm of life beneath the waves. He credits these dual careers with keeping him grounded and inspired, allowing him to share his passions with others while constantly learning and evolving himself.

When he’s not teaching or diving, Tom enjoys exploring Japan’s hidden treasures, from remote mountain temples to quiet fishing villages and hiking with his precocious Shiba Inu dogs. He is also an avid writer, penning essays, short stories and novels that reflect his cross-cultural experiences and adventures. Tom believes that his life’s journey is proof that following one’s passions—no matter how different they may seem—can lead to a uniquely fulfilling existence.
